The Central African Republic (CAR)

With a population of nearly 5 million, the Central African Republic has faced volatility and instability since gaining independence in 1960.  The UN estimates that as of June 2021, there are more than 2.8 million people in need of assistance, including the more than 690,000 internally displaced persons (IDPs).  In addition to the IDPs, there are approximately 700,000 refugees in neighboring countries.

Although resource rich, the country remains one of the poorest in the world.  With little media attention or international awareness about the ongoing conflict in the country and periodic natural disasters which further exacerbate displacement of the population, the outlook for the country remains uncertain.
